Bring your camera to class!

In the digital age and the ability of almost anyone to take good pictures the question arises: “Should a teacher hold an interesting class activity and not have a camera present?” My answer, as you can tell from the title of this column is: “No, Teachers should take pictures as often as the can of their students!” By now those of you that read my columns know that I sometimes go by common sense in place of hard research or political properness so at this point I will state for the record:

·        There is no research to suggest that taking pictures of projects kids are proud of improves test results. Although it does make a neat bulletin board in my room.

·        There may be students that do not want their picture taken and some legal stuff about consent. I know my students pretty well, like all good teachers should, an I can tell when they pose for pictures.

·        Valuable digital cameras could get stolen at school. That’s why they make carry straps so you carry it with you.
  •  If you take pictures share them with your yearbook!

I use the camera to tell kids this is an important activity, to promote good ideas, to show off my kids and their work. So for once I’m going to stop typing and let pictures talk for me.
