A few years back I wrote a column about schoolIsland.com (NO not StudyIsland)and there have been changes over the years so this is an update! SchoolIsland now covers Math K-Pre Calculus. (Yes elementary and middle school has been added.) Science K-12, Social Studies K-12, English K-12 and now French and Spanish. In addition to the expanded grade levels and subjects teachers can now add their own questions to the test generators test file. Students can get a hint and second try and then can try again. The teacher then has an option on how to count the second grade- No credit, half credit and full credit for the assignment. I still think the web based site of schoolIsland is the best "bang for the buck" for a school. I have had individual students do over 2000 questions and our school of under 2000 students has done over 350000 questions in one year! I can work with homebound students, suspended students, even one of my students in another city hospital getting medical treatment. There is no download to your school system.
Folks they will come out train your staff free of charge. They offer free trials to those that attend some conferences. Heck they might help you out if you mention this column (I don't know but you can always ask!)
Last- No teaching tool is a magic bullet! A bad teacher's best teaching idea is to quit and a good teacher can teach with pencil and paper only! BUT this is a good tool for a good teacher! Try it you might like it!
